TTG from the KBA: What Does the Part Type Approval Mean for Motorcycle Accessories?
Anyone who customises their motorcycle will sooner or later come across terms such as ABE, TÜV part report or registration obligation. For some time now, a new term has been appearing more frequently: TTG – the Part Type Approval from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). But what is behind it, why is it increasingly replacing the classic part report, and what does this specifically mean for you as a motorcyclist?
What is a TTG (Part Type Approval)?
The TTG is a national approval issued by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) for certain vehicle and attachment parts. It confirms that a component meets the legal requirements and may be used on the vehicle types listed in the document.
In many cases, the TTG today takes on exactly the role that a TÜV part report used to have. The decisive difference: The approval is no longer merely issued by a Technical Service, but directly granted and monitored by the KBA.
Why is the TTG Increasingly Replacing the TÜV Part Report?
For new inspection-required vehicle parts, Technical Services may no longer issue classic part reports in the future. Instead, the approval is processed via the Part Type Approval at the KBA.
For manufacturers and dealers, this means more transparency and a uniform approval structure. For motorcyclists, it primarily means: Legal certainty for new accessories.
The TTG is not a disadvantage for riders – it is the logical evolution of the previous approval systems.
Registration Obligation: Does a TTG Part Need to Be Registered?
Whether a component with TTG needs to be registered depends not solely on the TTG itself, but on the conditions in the respective approval document.
Typical Cases in Practice
-
TTG / ABE without additional conditions:
In many cases, it is sufficient to carry the approval documents and follow the installation instructions. -
TTG with conditions:
Depending on the component, an additional inspection or registration may be necessary, for example when certain conditions need to be met or verified. -
Without approval:
Then usually only an individual approval remains, which is significantly more complex.
The decisive factor is always: What specifically does the TTG or the enclosed documents state?
What Applies to Existing Registrations and Old Part Reports?
Good news for everyone who has already modified their bike:
- Already properly registered modifications remain valid.
- Parts with existing ABE can continue to be used as usual.
- There is no obligation to retrospectively convert old registrations to TTG.
The TTG primarily concerns new products and new approvals.
What Does This Specifically Mean for Motorrad Burchard?
To ensure that our inspection-required components remain legal, registrable and problem-free in the future, we are gradually converting the corresponding products from existing TÜV part reports to the new TTG approval.
This particularly affects components of our own brands Burchard Excellence and Highway Hawk, where we place great emphasis on precision fit, quality and legal certainty.
Conclusion: TTG Brings Clarity and Future Security
The TTG (Part Type Approval) is not a bureaucratic hurdle but a modern standard for motorcycle accessories. It ensures clear responsibilities, uniform testing and long-term legal certainty – for manufacturers, dealers and above all for you as a rider.
If you are unsure which approval applies to a specific part or whether registration is necessary, you will find the relevant information directly in the product description or in the enclosed documents.
