Abbreviations explained
- DOT 4 / DOT 5 / DOT 5.1
- DOT is the US Department of Transportation standard for brake fluid; the number indicates the minimum boiling point (DOT 4 ≈ 230 °C, DOT 5.1 ≈ 260 °C). DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based and can be mixed. DOT 5 is silicone-based and must never be mixed with the others. Brake fluid absorbs water and needs replacing regularly.
- Viscosity (e.g. 10W-40)
- Viscosity describes how thick an oil is. In a multigrade oil such as 10W-40, the number before the W refers to cold behaviour (W = winter; lower is better for cold starts), the number after to viscosity at 100 °C operating temperature. A single value like 10W is a monograde oil – typical for fork oil.
- SAE
- SAE is the standard used to classify the viscosity of oils. It says nothing about the oil's quality, only about how it flows when cold and at operating temperature.
- API (SF, SG, SJ, SL …)
- The American Petroleum Institute classifies engine oil performance. For petrol engines the class starts with S; the second letter marks the generation – the further along the alphabet, the newer the specification (SL is newer than SG). “Min. API SG” means: use at least this class.
- NGK spark plug code
- The NGK code encodes the plug's full design. The digit in the middle is the heat range: the higher it is, the colder the plug (it dissipates more heat, for high loads). Letters describe thread, design and electrode material (e.g. IX = iridium). Only use plugs with the heat range specified by the manufacturer.
- PS / kW
- Power is given in kilowatts (kW, the SI unit) and metric horsepower (PS): 1 kW equals roughly 1.36 PS. Where two values appear, they usually mean the full-power and a restricted version (e.g. for licence classes).
- “Cold”
- “Cold” means the value is measured with the engine cold. Valve clearance changes with temperature because metal expands – measuring warm when the figure is for cold gives the wrong setting.
- ± (tolerance)
- The ± sign states the permitted deviation: “1200 ± 100 rpm” means anything between 1100 and 1300 rpm is fine.
- Range (e.g. 0.07–0.12 mm)
- A range gives a minimum and a maximum. For valve clearance any value within the range is acceptable; if the measured value is below or above, it must be adjusted.
